First off, I want to say that I was very surprised to see that Dave and the boys were going to open for the Rolling Stones, especially when you see the two other opening bands (Third Eye Blind, and the Smashing Pumpkins). DMB doesn’t really match up with any of them, but, whatever. Our seats were great, on the field and about 30 rows from the stage ..... for those of you who don’t know the Orange Bowl, its HUGE, it might be the biggest place Dave has ever played ..... the band went on at 5:00 .... which meant that the stadium was maybe 1/4 filled, most of the people who had tickets were older people (working a 9-5 job) and most of them knew that the stones were comin on at 8, so alot of them didnt show up till then .... Just to give you an idea of the audience ..... the group sitting next to me walked up while Dave was getting on stage and one of the guys (About 55 years old) stood up, shook my hand, and said “Hello, my name’s Phil, I guess we’ll be watching the show together tonight .... Do you know who this band up there is?” .... Needless to say, I started laughing my ass off ..... #41: Great jamming song, and a pretty good opening ..... nothing spectacular though Two Step: LOVED the into to it .... Boyd was goin crazy picking on his violin and Dave was great (as usual) Tripping Billies: For some reason I never really liked this song, it’s catchy, but a little too much Boyd for me on this one (never thought I’d say that) Watchtower: Right when I heard Dave start pluckin the opening my friend and I both looked at each other and went crazy .... I couldn’t believe they would play this during an opening .... they did an AMAZING job on this one, it definitely made the whole show worthwhile ...... during the solo, boyd started picking on his violin (I guess he was in a picking mood tonight) its a solo i’ve never heard, and I loved it .... Crash Into Me: What a surprise!!! ... we all knew it was coming, and even though I hear the song every day on 5 different stations, I still love it .... not that much of a difference though, they played the song pretty straight up normal .... So Much to Say: This really energized the crowd ... it was kinda weird putting a song like Crash in between Watchtower and SMTS .... but it kinda worked, I loved the segue into Anyone Seen the Bridge? too, all the previous songs had definite beginnings and endings .... Anyone Seen the Bridge?: Great jam, I’m wondering if they;re going to expand on it and add lyrics or anything ..... I loved how SMTS ended with him repeating “little baby, little baby” and worked into ASTB Too Much: I HATE THIS SONG, I liked the movement from ASTB into too much .... but I was cringing the whole time he was playing it .... its probably the only DMB song I don’t like (ok, maybe Halloween too) Ants Marching: Another big surprise, ending the set (and a short one at that) with Ants Marching .... they did well though, but again, nothing spectacular .... Overall, the show was what I expected .... DMB wasn’t headlining, so they had to play their recognizable songs for the crowd who wasnt really there to see them (even though a few hundred people left right after Dave got off stage) ..... I just wish they could’ve mixed up the setlist a little, even though Watchtower was a very welcome surprise (the old guy next to me even recongnized it) .... One more thing, I really appreciate the Stones much more after seeing this concert, they performed great even if they should be in nursing homes by now .... also, Marilyn Manson came on the stage with Smashing Pumpkins to play a tune, god do they suck (the pumpkins and manson) ..... Dave and the Stones were the only good things on the stage that night.
