A. General Information

A1. Okay, middle name and birthday ... ?
John Clayton Mayer was born on October 16, 1977.
A2. How do you say it?
Mayer. Like May-er. Ya know, the month.
A3. Where does John live? Does he like sports? Does he have a girlfriend, etc.?
It's called a personal life; everyone deserves one. Give the guy a break.
A4. How did John get into playing guitar?
In an interview with cjonline.com, John said, "I've always had a strange pull toward guitar. But the defining moment was when Michael J. Fox played "Johnny Be Goode" in Back to the Future. He was always such a dork and then there's this explosion of cool. I think after that I was definitely into playing guitar." In another story, he was given a tape by a neighbor with some SRV on it which prompted him to pick up a guitar.

B. Inside Wants Out

B1. What is it?
Inside Wants Out is John's independently released "demo" cd. Released in 1999, the cd contains nine songs, though eight are listed on the cover, and only two are full band.
B2. Why does mine only have eight songs?
Here is where things get tricky. In early 2001 Inside Wants Out was discontinued and put out of print. For a while copies would surface on eBay.com for up to $300 a copy. Rumors went around that it would be re-released in 2002. For once the rumors were right and in August of 2002 Columbia Records released Inside Wants Out to the public again.

That still doesn't answer your question? Okay, no one is sure why except the people involved, but Neon 12:47am is not included on the tracklisting. They took it off. They added a bar code and Columbia/Aware logo and sent it out into the world so it could debut at #22 on Billboard.

C. Room for Squares

C1. Why is a periodic table printed on the disc?
His chemistry teacher in high school. John said at that time his chem teacher was the only one who understood what he was doing with guitar and music. Even though he might not have been the best student in school, his chem teacher supported him in his music and was always talking to him about it.
C2. What is the difference between the first and second printings of Room for Squares?
New artwork, a new song ("3x5"), and seven remixed songs.
C3. Why are there two different copies?
Not long after the first release of RFS, John was picked up by Columbia records who stopped the pressing of the first issue and released the newer version.
C4. What's the deal with the bonus disc?
Attached to the Columbia release of RFS was a two track bonus disc. This disc contains covers of Stevie Ray Vaughn's "Lenny" and Jimi Hendrix's "Wind Cries Mary". It was said to be limited edition but exactly how limited I have no idea.
C5. Whats up with track 13?
The number 13 is supposedly bad luck. Why not skip it?

D. John's Band

D1. Who is in the band?
First is the singer and lead guitarist, John Mayer (duh). To his left/your right is Dela on bass. On stage right (your left) is Mike Chavez on guitar. Right behind John is Stephen Chopek on the drums.
D2. Has he had any other players?
Past drummers include Carlton Owens (08.29.01-11.08.01) and Matt Johnson (11.09.01-02.11.02). Past guitarists Matt Mangano (September 2001 - May 2002).
D3. Does the band have a name?
Yup. John has referred to the band as "The Super Pals".
D4. Who is Dela?
Dela is David Labruyere, John's bass player. If you say his name a few times you'll understand how they got Dela out of it.

E. John's Crew

E1. Who is Scotty Crowe?
Scotty (who writes the road journal on johnmayer.com) was John's tour manager from spring-fall 2001. He is now in charge of merchandise.
E2. The Chad?
The Chad is John's Front of House Audio engineer.
E3. Ken Helie?
Ken is John's tour manager
E4. That can't be all. Isn't there more?
Of course there are more members of John's touring crew. The three listed above are the only ones that are repeatedly brought up to the public in the road journal.

F. Videos, TV, Movies

F1. Does John have any music videos?
Yes he does. Two. One for "No Such Thing" and another for "Your Body is a Wonderland".
F2. Where was No Such Thing filmed.
You make think the scenery for the No Such Thing video looks familiar if you live in the Athens, GA area. The video was filmed at the Georgia Theater on February 7, 2002. It made it's first appearance March 11, 2002 on VH1.
F3. When did Your Body is a Wonderland premiere?
We first started seeing the video on VH1 on September 19, 2002.
F4. On which talk shows has John Appeared?
On November 9, 2001, John made his national television debut playing "No Such Thing" on Late Night with Conan O'Brien (The red shoes are made by Diesel). This was followed up by appearances on The Tonight Show (03.13.02, 12.04.02, & 08.13.02), The Late Show (10.03.02), Late World with Zach (03.14.02), The Late Late Show (04.04.02), and Last Call with Carson Daly which aired on 04.24.02.
F5. Any movie soundtracks?
"83" made a brief appearance in the movie Serendipity which starred John Cusack.

G. Mislabed MP3 Files

G1. What is Little Puppy?
Not a John Mayer song. Though it was spread on file sharing programs such as Napster and Kazaa as a John Mayer song it was actually written and performed by Jack Maher and Matt Mangano.
G2. Is Whole Again a JM song?
No. Once again we fall victim to the foul hands of mis-labeled files. The song is by Granian.
G3. John Mayer & Nickel Creek? Really?
This one is a bit tricky. There are a few mislabeled studio tracks claiming that the mp3 is John and Nickel Creek. Unless it is a live track recorded between Oct. and Dec. of 2002, it's bogus.
G4. I found a studio version of Breakaway and it doesn't sound like John. Can you fill me in?
Sure I can. This is not John. Despite what many people think, Breakaway was written by John's former guitarist Matt Mangano. He is the one singing on this studio recording.

H. Guest Appearances

Has john ever appeared on another artists CD?
a. He sure has. John sang back up vocals on "Bliss". A track from Alice Peacock's self titled release.
b. John played electric guitar on Michelle Malone's 1999 release "Homegrown".
c. He played guitar on Michelle Malone's cover of "The Look of Love" for a 2000 Dusty Springfield tribute entitled Forever Dusty.
d. Matthew Kahler had John record some guitar for two tracks off his album "Out of the Blue". "Somebody" and "You (The Speed of Light)"
